Join CNDP & Brookings for “Assembling Public Perspectives on AI”
The Center for New Democratic Processes is very excited to announce “Assembling Public Perspectives on AI,” our upcoming results launch event for the U.S. Public Assembly on High Risk AI (AI Assembly), the first national deliberative event on AI in the United States.
On December 13th, 2023, CNDP will co-host this event with the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. “Assembling Public Perspectives on AI” will take place from 1:00-2:30EST and will be livestreamed for those unable to join in-person.
Register here to join the event virtually (or in person, if you’re in the DC area).
At the event, project team members will present results from the Assembly Report and AI Assembly participants will share insights from their experience in the process. The event will conclude with a Panel Discussion moderated by Brookings Fellow Valerie Wirtschafter, who will be joined by AI Assembly project team members and Paul Waters, Director of the Digital Democracy Initiative at Democracy Fund. Panelists will assess the Assembly’s implications for policymakers, the tech industry, and the future of AI governance and reflect on the path forward for democratic deliberation on the governance of artificial intelligence.
About the AI Assembly
In October 2023, CNDP partnered with Dr. Baobao Zhang (Maxwell Dean Assistant Professor of the Politics of AI at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University) to conduct the Public Assembly on High Risk AI (AI Assembly). Dr. Zhang commissioned the AI Assembly as part of a Schmidt Futures AI2050 Early Career Fellowship.
The AI Assembly convened forty, randomly-selected US residents virtually over eight days. Assembly participants heard from experts and deliberated about examples of AI systems regarding risk, exploring accountability and responsibility, as well as potential harms associated with various uses of AI (including administrative, health, search, and face recognition systems).
Findings from the AI Assembly will be circulated among stakeholders in order to shape future policy discussions on AI governance and policy development, risk and regulatory frameworks, as well as responsible and trustworthy AI. The AI Assembly will also serve as a starting point for exploring how to more effectively involve the public in future discussions regarding AI and emerging technologies.
We look forward to sharing more about this project at the event and hope you can join us. Be on the lookout for more information about this project and our upcoming activities exploring the future of public participation and deliberative engagement on emerging tech issues and AI governance in 2024 and beyond.
